Plasma is becoming increasingly popular in the beauty and aesthetics industry. However, most people don’t know how plasma really works. So, before deciding whether this procedure will work for you, it’s time to do some research.

Learn more about plasma and plasma skin tightening procedures when you continue reading.

What Is Plasma?

Plasma is a luminous gas that contains reactive atoms and molecules. That’s why most of the colours you see result from plasma rather than the sun’s light. But plasma doesn’t just appear in the sky.

In the past, scientists have used plasma to create fuel, plasma TV screens, and other energy sources. Today, you can also find this gas in plasma skin tightening procedures.

Plasma skin tightening is a relatively new skin treatment introduced in the early 2000s. It became popular after it was discovered that this technique produced results similar to those of surgical procedures.

Why Is Plasma Important in Skin Tightening and Rejuvenation?

Plasma skin tightening is the first non-invasive procedure and the only one that uses plasma to treat the signs of ageing.

There are many ways that you can use plasma in your beauty regimen. You can use plasma to remove tattoos, improve the results of chemical peels and microdermabrasion treatments, and even use it to tighten the skin.

This is what makes plasma an excellent skin treatment, especially if you want to achieve results that are as good as those of surgical procedures but without having to spend a lot of money.

What Is a Plasma Pen?

A Plasma Pen is a handheld device you can use to create plasma. It’s basically a wand and emits light. For this reason, many people call the plasma pen a type of laser. But, unlike lasers, the device doesn’t require a chromaphore in the skin for the laser light to be attracted to. Instead, the plasma pen sends a ball of light with a purple hue of inonised gas through the skin, otherwise known as plasma energy which is the fourth state of matter and is what is used for tightening the skin.

This is how plasma skin tightening devices work:

The device creates a ball of purple light which is a gas otherwise called plasma energy. Plasma is a highly energised and ionised gas with enough energy to penetrate the skin.

The skin then absorbs the plasma gas that is emitted by the pen. As a result, the skin cells use the energy they get from the plasma to repair themselves whilst teaching fibroblast cells to produce more collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid.

Who Can Have a Plasma Skin Tightening Treatment?

Plasma skin tightening is for people who want to tighten the skin on their face, neck or body, however it is best to work in small areas to promote a rapid healing response.

Plasma skin tightening treatments are also not meant for people with skin conditions, such as open wounds, eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis etc. And, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you shouldn’t undergo a plasma skin tightening treatment due the fact a topical numbing agent is required to be used and this could be harmful to the unborn and born child.

Because of these precautions, you mustn’t undergo a plasma skin tightening treatment without talking to your doctor, dermatologist or professional skin professional first.

Does Plasma Skin Tightening Have Contraindications?

Plasma skin tightening is generally safe, but this procedure isn’t recommended for everyone. Plasma treatments are not for people who are:

  • Pregnant
  • Taking anti-acne medication such as isotretinoin
  • Nursing mothers
  • Cancer patients
  • Wearing pacemakers
  • Wearing metal implants
  • Using anti-acne medication such as isotretinoin
  • Hepatitis patients
  • Uncontrolled Diabetes patients

It’s best to consult a doctor, dermatologist or skin care professional before you decide to undergo a plasma skin tightening treatment.

Final Thoughts

Plasma skin tightening is a safe and effective treatment. The procedure tightens the skin by using the energy of the plasma to stimulate collagen and elastin production, which leads to a smooth and firmer complexion.
