Should I Have Surgery for Stretch Marks?

stretch marks

Stretch marks are something that a lot of people have and they are nothing to be ashamed of, but they can knock your confidence. This leads to a lot of people wondering if surgery for stretch marks is an option.

What Causes Stretch Marks and How to Prevent Them?

Stretch marks appear when the skin stretches quickly and there isn’t enough collagen to allow for this to happen. Without enough collagen, the skin’s elasticity cannot increase with the stretching, and it begins to tear and become damaged. This results in the skin becoming thinner and more transparent, and the blood vessels will eventually begin to show. It’s these blood vessels that cause a visible red or purple stretch mark that you are used to seeing. Over time, the red and purple colouring begins to fade, which results in a permanent scar.

There are a lot of misconceptions surrounding stretch marks and what causes them, with a lot of people assuming that being overweight is the sole cause. However, this isn’t the case. Stretch marks are generally caused by changes in weight, such as rapid weight gain and pregnancy, but lifestyle factors can have an impact. For example, a lack of hydration can increase the chances of stretch marks appearing, as dehydration can reduce the skin’s elasticity.

Stretch marks are most commonly found on areas of the body that change size and shape a lot, such as the stomach, breasts and thighs. This is why you rarely find stretch marks on areas such as hands and feet, as these parts of the body don’t tend to gain weight or stretch.

Can I Have Surgery for Stretch Marks?

To put it simply, no, you can’t have surgery for stretch marks. Due to the way that stretch marks form, surgery often isn’t an option as it would involve removing the skin. This is sometimes possible with a tummy tuck, as the surgery involves the removal of excess skin, which would also take the stretch marks with it.

Is Surgery for Stretch Marks Risky?

Even where surgery for stretch marks is a possibility, it’s an extreme measure as there is potential for complications and serious side effects with any surgery. Plus, cosmetic surgery can be expensive and a long recovery time is likely. This is why a lot of people opt for non-invasive and non-surgical treatment, such as PlasmaPen.

What Can I Do About Stretch Marks?

One of the most effective ways of reducing the appearance of stretch marks is fibroblast treatment, which is achievable with PlasmaPen. It’s a relatively straightforward and simple treatment option, and the majority of patients find it to be painless. There are also few side effects with PlasmaPen treatment, meaning that you can reduce the appearance of stretch marks without navigating a lengthy downtime.

With PlasmaPen, you don’t need surgery for stretch marks, as the same results can be achieved with our one of a kind device. Get in touch to find out more.
