How to Handle a Nervous Client at Your Beauty Salon

When a client walks into your beauty salon, they are expecting to feel pampered and taken care of, and most people look forward to their treatment. However, some clients find it difficult to feel relaxed and at ease, which can put them off. It’s not uncommon for clients to feel nervous or anxious when they go to a beauty salon, even if they have an exciting Plasma Pen or CoolJet treatment to look forward to. This could be because of a bad experience with another salon, or because they struggle with new situations. It could be because they’re having a cosmetic treatment for the first time, or because it’s out of their comfort zone.

Knowing how to handle these clients with care and professionalism can transform their visit into a positive and memorable one, one that they’ll want to repeat. Below, we have taken a look at some of the key things that you can do to put a nervous client at ease.

Top Tips for Making Nervous Clients Feel at Ease

Owning a beauty salon means catering to a wide range of clients, all of whom will have their own unique needs and emotions. This includes nervous clients, which require special attention and care to ensure that they have a positive beauty experience

  • Send a Welcome Text – For some people, going somewhere new can be hugely daunting, and a beauty salon is no different. To make them feel as welcome as possible, consider sending them a text beforehand. Confirm their appointment time and let them know what to expect, such as where to find parking or how to arrive via public transport.

  • Give Directions – Even if someone has visited your salon a number of times before, give them helpful directions. Show them where to hang their coat, where to wait and which room to go into for their treatment. Knowing where to go and what to do can alleviate nerves in a big way, as it makes an unfamiliar experience feel a lot more manageable.

  • Introduce Yourself, Your Team and Your Salon – When you meet a new client, take a moment to properly introduce yourself, and encourage your staff to do the same. This also means introducing your salon, including showing them where the waiting area is, where they can sit comfortably and where the bathroom is.

  • Listen to Their Concerns – It’s not uncommon for nervousness to stem from a previous negative experience at another beauty salon, or from a deep rooted fear. Take the time to listen actively to their concerns, showing empathy and understanding. It’s important that you acknowledge their feelings, making them feel heard and understood.

  • Offer a Consultation – Offering a consultation before the treatment can significantly reduce a client’s nerves. During the consultation, discuss their preferences, expectations and any worries they might have, and try to reassure them about their upcoming visit to your salon. This also gives you an opportunity to explain the process and share what you can do to make the experience an enjoyable one for them.

  • Communicate Effectively – Be sure to communicate with your client throughout their appointment. Let them know what you’re doing at all stages of the treatment, and highlight if they can expect to feel something cold, hot or any discomfort. It’s a lot easier to relax when you know what to expect.

  • Check Your Body Language and Paralanguage – It’s a lot easier to feel relaxed at a beauty salon if everyone else there is also relaxed. Body language and paralanguage – which is the way that we speak, including pace, volume and facial expressions – can set the tone of an entire visit. If you speak calmly and at a steady pace, a client is likely to relax and feel at ease. This isn’t always the case if you are talking loudly. Your body language should be relaxed, approachable and friendly.

  • Ask Questions Throughout – A lot of people underestimate the importance of asking their clients questions. Some clients might be hesitant to tell you if something is uncomfortable, too hot or too cold, but asking them can encourage them to let you know. Ask if they are comfortable, if the lighting is okay and if they need anything throughout the session. There might be something that the client wants to say but they are too nervous to speak up, so it’s up to you to get the conversation going.

  • Patience is Key – Patience goes a long way in making a nervous client feel comfortable at your beauty salon. Let them know that there’s no rush, that you are focused on them, and that you’re willing to take things as slowly as they need you to. Take your time with the treatment, and be mindful of how you touch and move around them. Avoid sudden or unexpected actions, and focus on being as gentle as possible.

  • Follow Up With Them – If you want a nervous client to return, you need to follow up with them. A follow up call or message after the treatment shows that you care about their experience and wellbeing. Ask them how they are feeling and if they were satisfied with the service, and if there’s anything that you could have done differently. This could encourage them to return to your beauty salon in the future.

There are a lot of nervous clients out there, but by following our advice above, you can help them to relax and enjoy whatever treatment they have chosen. Not only does this make the entire experience less daunting for them, but it also encourages them to return to your salon in the future. Who knows, they could be returning for Plasma Pen treatment before you know it. Get in touch with our talented team to find out more.
