What are fibroblasts?
Fibroblasts are the most common biological cells that develop and maintain connective tissue in the body. The main structural protein secreted by fibroblasts is collagen which helps to minimise fine lines, micro-furrows and wrinkles on the face and improves the elasticity, suppleness and hydration of our skin. Fibroblasts also secrete other structural proteins including:
- Glycoproteins
- Glycosaminoglycans
- Various fibres
Most fibroblasts are inactive and will not produce collagen unless they are specifically reactivated by a wound healing process or inflammatory response. Fibroblasting is, therefore, the art of reactivating this production process for smoother and more lifted looking skin.
Fibroblast skin tightening treatments to rejuvenate the skin
As we age, the dermis which is the middle layer of the skin where fibroblasts are found starts to thin which causes it to lose collagen and elastin. The result can be wrinkled or saggy skin that looks and feels older. For many women and men, wrinkled skin can have a huge knock-on effect to their confidence.
Luckily, fibroblast skin tightening treatments are available to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
How do PlasmaPen fibroblast skin-tightening treatments work?
Our PlasmaPen device works by rapidly transferring nitrogen plasma energy into the skin’s epidermal layer whilst simultaneously heating and disrupting the deeper dermal structure via thermal conduction. In doing so, we intentionally create a dual-zone of micro-trauma which comprises a superficial zone of outer thermal micro-damage to the epidermis. This then simultaneously creates a deeper zone of inner thermal modification within the dermis – especially to the fibroblasts.
When the micro-damage occurs fibroblasts near the wound will multiply, travel to the site of damage and secrete collagen and other proteins to isolate the injury and facilitate wound repair.
The result after twelve weeks of healing is brighter, more contoured and youthful skin – all without the need for fillers, suturing, scalpels, injectable anaesthetics or costly and invasive surgery.
